Effect of low-calcium and high-magnesium drinking water on bone metablism in rats

  •   Objective   To investigate the effect of magnesium supplement and calcium depletion drinking water on bone mass loss in rats.
Methods   Wister female rats received purified dirnking water with Mg supplement and Ca deficiency. At 3rd month, blood was collected for serum Ca, Mg, P, alkaline phosphatase(ALP), BALP and ostecocalsin examination. Then the rats were sacrificed and the femurs were obtained for bone mineral density(BMD)and histomorphometry.
Results   In both high-Mg water group and low-Ca and high Mg water group, serum ALP, BALP and osteocalcin were significantly higher than those of the other two groups, while serum Ca, Mg, P, body weight, weight and BMD of left femora did not change significantly medullary area, decreased cortical area and the trabecular did not change significantly compared with the other two groups.Histomorphometry demonstrated increased medullary area, decreased cortical area and the trabecular bone volume in low-Ca and high-Mg water group.
Conclusion   Magnesium influenced bone metablism and a low calcium was not the only reason to induce osteoporosis.High magnesium might cause bone loss of growing rats.
