Study on condition of trying cigarette smoking and social and psychological correlates of middle school students

  •   Objective   To investigate the cigarette smoking condition of middle school students and analyze the social psychological correlates, so as to provide reliable reference for the exploration and establishment of new scientific, effective and Chinese-characteristic model of adolescent smoking prevention and control.
      Methods   The requested size of sample were drawn from the students in middle schools in Hangzhou by stratified sampling. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the basic results. Chi-square test was employed to analyze the single influence factors of cigarette smoking. Subsequently, the positive factors were analyzed with multinomial Logistic regression analysis.
      Results   The ever-trying-smoking rate of 1st grade of junior middle school students was 9.7%, that of 2nd grade of senior middle school students was 41.0%.The evertrying-smoking rate of the male was rather higher than the female one. The ever-trying-smoking rate of professional senior middle school students was higher than that of the ordinary ones. The four most important smoking motivation were: not willing to refuse an offer, to help to terrible problems, to feel more energetic, to feel likemaking own decisions. Influencing factors of smoking: from junior middle school to senior ones, peer influence, alcohol, aggression, anxiety, depression were the middle school students' influential factors of smoking.
      Conclusion   From junior middle school to senior ones, the condition of tobacco use of adolescents were worse continuously and the sex characteristic was accord with that of the whole social population. Peer influence, use of alcohol, aggression, depression, anxiety were the important social psychological influencing factors of the behavior of ever trying smoking.
