Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between dietary salt intake and obesity in adults.Methods With multistage randomized cluster sampling,30 572 residents aged 18 years or more and without chronic diseases were selected from Xuzhou municipality and surveyed face-to-face with a general questionnaire and dietary recall method in April 2013.Results The average amount of dietary salt intake was 14.53±11.04 g per day and the prevalence rate of overweight,obesity,and central obesity were 32.17%(9 834/30 572),7.09%(2 169/30 572),and 45.58%(13 934/30 572),respectively.After adjusting for potential confounding factors,the excessive dietary intake (>6 g per day) was related to obesity and central obesity,with the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of 1.467 (1.267-1.698) and 1.155 (1.080-1.234).Conclusion Excessive dietary salt intake is an important risk factor for obesity and education on the promotion of low-salt diet should be conducted promptly among adult residents in Xuzhou municipality.
