Abstract:
Objective To investigate the effect of soybean hypocotyl extract on lipid peroxide(LPO), malondialdehy de (MDA) and super oxide dismutase (SOD)of blood and liver in diabetic rats.
Methods Diabetic rats were given diet containing 20 g/kg of soybean hypocotyl extract for 20 weeks, and then blood LPO was measured by colorimetric method, MDA was measured by thiobarbituric method, and SOD activity was investigated by xanthine oxidase method.
Results After 20 weeks of experiment, serum LPO and MDA contents were significantly decreased, and SOD activities in serum and liver were increased noticeably.
Conclusion Soybean hypocotyl extract had the function of decreasing blood LPO and MDA contents, and increasing serum and hepatic SOD activities, thus it may be useful in prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus and diabetes-associated diseases.
