Study on anti-carcinogenic effects of vitamins and trace elements in tea

    Abstract:
Objective   Anti-carcinogenic effects of several vitamins and trace elements in tea were investigated in order to compare the anticar cinogenic effects among the teaingredients.
Methods   By using several well-established short term, tests i.e, V79 cell cyto kinesis block micronuclei test, V79 cell metabolic cooperation test and Hela cell growth ability test in soft agar, several trace elements including Zn, Se, Mn, Mo and vitamin C, E and B-carotene were used to screen the anticarcinogenic ingredients in the tea.
Results   Zn, Se, Mn, B-carotene at the concentration of 10 -5 mol/L vitamin C at the concentration of 10 -6 and 10 -5 mol/L, vitamin E at the concentration of 10 and 20 mg/L inhibited the for mation of micronuclei in V79 cells.Se, Mo, B-carotene, vitamin C at the concentration of 10 -5 mol/L, vitamin E at the concentration of 10 and 20 mg/L prevented the Hela cell growth ability in soft agar. However, seven elements had no effect on V79 cell metabolic cooperation inhibited by TPA.
Conclusion   Tested trace elements and vitamins had anticar cinogenic effects athigh concentrations. But these elements weren't the major anticarcinogenic ingredients in tea.
