Risk factors related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease among staff in Tsinghua university

  • Objective To investigate the prevalence and major risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)among the staff taking health examination in a unive rsity in Beijing. Methods Questionnaire survey and health examination were conducted among 9.852 active or retired staff in the university,2009.Results The preva lence rate of AFLD in the staff was 24.3%.The prevalence of NAFLD in the men was significantly higher than that of in the women (29.9% vs 17.9%,P<0.01).NAFLD was correlated to age and gender. The highest prevalence was found in the staff at ages of 51-60 years in men(33.9%)and 61-70 years in women(32.2%).The prevalence of NAFLD in the male staff of<70 years old was significantly higher than that of in the women(χ2=259.686,P<0.001).However,no gender difference in the preva lence was observed among the staff>70 years old(χ2=1.378,P>0.05).The level of body mass index (BMI),systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),triglyceride lipase(TG),blood glucose, glumatic pyruric tran saminase(GPT),and uricacid in NAFLD group was remarkably higher than those in control group(P<0.01 for all),whereas the level of high density lipopro tein cholesterol(HDLC)was lower than that of the control(t=9.424,P=0.000)among the staff at the age of 61-70 years. For the staff with diabetes or hypertension, the prevalence of AFLD,overweight, and obesity were significantly higher than those of incontrol group. The major comorbid diseases of AFLD were overweight or obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.NAFLD was related to age, gender,BMI,blood glucose, BP,TG,HDL-C,GPT,and uricacid. Conclusion NAFLD is closely related with chronic non infectious diseases, especially with diabetes and hypertension.
