Relationships between conventional cardiovascular risk factors and pre-diabetes and diabetes

  • ObjectiveTo explore the associations of conventional cardiovascular risk factors(age, gender, body mass index〔BMI〕,central obesity, waist circumference, hip circumference, abdominal circumference,waist-hip ratio, and blood pressure)with pre-diabetes and diabetes.MethodsA total of 1 197 permanent residents aged 55-75 years from communities were investigated.Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the associations between conventional cardiovascular risk factors, interactions of inflammation and immune-related factors, and other factors and pre-diabetes and diabetes.ResultsThe proportions of overweight and obesity(based on BMI)were 36.1%,51.3%,and 53.7%,respectively,in the normal blood sugar group,pre-diabetes group, and diabetes group;the proportions of central obesity were 47.2%,64.0%,and 75.6% in the three groups;and the proportions of high blood pressure were 36.2%,49.4%,and 53.7%.Multivariate logis-tic regression analysis results showed that age,BMI,central obesity, abdominal circumference, hip circumference,waist-hip ratio, and blood pressure were related to both pre-diabetes and diabetes(P<0.05 for trend tests);compared with the pre-diabetes group, there were statistically significant correlations between central obesity, abdominal circumference, and waist to hip ratio and diabetes(P<0.05).ConclusionBoth pre-diabetes and diabetes are related to multiple conventional cardiovascular risk factors.
