Evaluation on effects of health education for male circumcision among farmer coal miners

ObjectiveTo evaluate the intervention effects of male circumcision(MC)promotion program among farmer coal miners.MethodsA total of 571 male farmer coal miners in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were selected with cluster sampling.After a baseline survey,health education was conducted in the miners.Nine months later,a follow-up survey was conducted to collect information on the knowledge,attitude and practice about MC for AIDS prevention.ResultsMC knowledge of the farmer miners was generally improved.The awareness for prevention of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases,protection of sexual partners'reproductive health,and prevention of genital inflammation or cancer caused by MC were significantly improved to 76.61% (321/419),63.01% (264/419),and 52.03% (218/419),respectively(P=0.000).There was also a significant increase in the ratio of the miners willing to have MC from 26.09% (149/571) to 55.37% (232/419)(P=0.000),and 55 miners had MC surgery with a circumcision rate of 13.13% (55/419).There were 23 cases(6.63%)with commercial sex in the last 6 months,which was less than 53 cases(9.81%)before the intervention(P>0.05).Meanwhile,the rate of condom use in the cases with commercial intercourse increased from 28.30% (15/53)to 65.22% (15/23)(P<0.05).ConclusionThe health education on MC showed a remarkable positive effect on knowledge,attitude and practice of MC for AIDS prevention among farmer miners.
