Objective To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of genital Chlamydia trachomatis (GCT) infection among female attendees at sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) clinics in Guangdong province.
Methods We recruited female attendees at the STD clinics in Dongguan and Zhongshan municipality and collected the information on demographic characteristics, history of sex behavior, and laboratory tests for STDs of the attendees. Logistic regression model was applied to analyze associated factors of GCT infection.
Results In total, 93 (8.8%) female attendees were diagnosed with GCT infection. The positive rate of GCT was higher in the attendees aged≤25 years than in those aged 26 – 40 and≥41 years (12.5% vs. 9.7% and 1.8%, both P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that factors significantly associated with GCT infection included age (≥41 vs.≤25 years: odds ratio OR = 0.214), monthly income (3 001 – 5 000 vs.≤3 000 RMB yuan: OR = 0.415), condom use in sex during the past six months (sometimes vs. never: OR = 0.292), perceived STD symptoms during the past year (yes vs. no: OR = 15.495), and having syphilis test in the present attendance (yes vs. no: OR = 0.109).
Conclusion The positive rate of GCT among female attendees of STD clinics in Guangdong province was high. Targeted intervention should be taken among the attendee groups with different characteristics.
