Satisfaction to AIDS prevention and control work among people living with HIV and AIDS in Guangxi

  •   Objective  To evaluate the satisfaction to AIDS prevention and control work among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS (PLWHA) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi) and to explore problems in the work for developing relevant strategies.
Methods  We conducted a survey among 999 PLWHA selected from 50 communities or villages in 10 counties or districts across Guangxi using stratified cluster random sampling in October 2016. A self-administered questionnaire was used in the study.
Results  Among the participants, the mean ratio of reporting satisfaction to main aspects of AIDS prevention and control was 84.9% and the satisfaction rates of the participants were 83.5% for health education, 91.8% for follow-up service, 88.1% for perceived respect while receiving medical service, 91.7% for privacy protection in medication, and 92.5% for communication with medical staff, respectively; but the satisfaction rate was only 61.8% for government assistance. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that compared to the rural PLWHA, the urban PLWHA were more likely to report lower satisfaction to health education (odds ratio OR = 0.578), follow-up (OR = 0.434), government assistance (OR = 0.416), and privacy protection in medication (OR = 0.559) (P < 0.05 for all). The analysis also revealed that in comparison to the PLWHA with self-paid treatment, the PLWHA with treatment free of charge and under other medical securities were more likely to report higher satisfaction to follow-up service (OR = 4.903 and OR = 9.331) (both P < 0.05); the PLWHA with partly self-paid and free of charge treatment were more likely to report satisfaction to perceived respect while receiving medical service (OR = 2.529 and OR = 3.270) (both P < 0.05); and the PLWHA with free of charge treatment, partly self-paid treatment, and other supported treatment were more likely to report satisfaction to privacy protection in medication (OR = 6.446, OR = 7.396, and OR = 13.444) (all P < 0.05).
Conclusion  The results of the study suggest that government assistance, health education, and medication quality need to be improved among PLWHA to upgrade HIV/AIDS prevention and control work in Guangxi.
