Researches on coinfection of Toxoplasma gondii among HIV/AIDS patients in China: a review

  • Toxoplasmosis is a serious opportunistic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), which has a wide range of parasitic hosts. A host is more susceptible to this disease when there is a decreased activity of its immune system. Human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) patients would have increased possibility of T. gondii infection when they have damaged immune cells and inhibited immune system due to having radiotherapy or chemotherapy. HIV/AIDS co-infected with T. gondii seriously affect the patients′ the prognosis and quality of life and more and more researchers have paid their attention to this issue. This study reviews researches on the prevalence, genotyping, diagnosis and treatment of T. gondii co-infection among HIV/AIDS patients in China and puts forward some suggestions for the prevention and control of T. gondii infection in HIV/AIDS patients.
