Objective To examine the prevalence and influence factors of diabetes mellitus (DM) among middle-aged and elderly urban residents in Hebei province and to provide evidences for prevention and control of DM.
Methods We drew a sample of 12 932 residents aged ≥ 45 years from 13 urban communities of 10 municipalities in Hebei province using stratified multistage random cluster sampling. Then we conducted a face-to-face questionnaire survey, physical examination and laboratory tests among the residents from September 2011 to May 2014.
Results Among the participants, totally 3 019 DM cases were identified and the prevalence rate of DM was 23.35%. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis revealed that aged ≥ 50 years, family history of DM, smoking, alcohol drinking, hypertension history, abnormality of triglyceride (TG)/low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)/high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) were risk factors of DM; while, education of junior high school and above and engaged in manual labor were protective factors against DM among the participants.
Conclusion The prevalence rate of DM is relatively high and mainly influenced by age, education, occupation, family DM history, smoking, alcohol drinking, hypertension history, and abnormalities of TB/LDL/HDL among middle-aged and elderly urban residents in Hebei province.
