Epidemiological characteristics of 1 926 children with cerebral palsy in Xinjiang

  •   Objective  To examine epidemiological characteristics of cerebral palsy in children in different regions of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang).
      Methods  A retrospective survey was conducted to investigate current status of 1 926 cerebral palsy children aged 0 – 20 years and diagnosed between 2011 – 2017 in Xinjiang.
      Results  Of all the cerebral palsy children enrolled, 1 129 (58.62%) were male and the ratio was significantly higher than that of the female; 1 115 (57.89%) were from southern Xinjiang, which was significantly more than those from other regions; 1 359 (70.56%) were Uygur ethnic group and the ratio was significantly higher than that of other ethnic groups (P < 0.05).The majority of the cerebral palsy children were at the ages of 4 – 12 years and there was a significant between age difference in the proportion of children with the disease (P < 0.05).
      Conclusion  In Xinjiang region from 2011 – 2017, more cerebral palsy children were from southern area and among Uighur population, and the majority of the children had spastic cerebral palsy. Health care should be strengthened among pregnancies during peripartum to decrease the incidence of the disease in the region.
