High-risk population and risk factor characteristics of chronic diseases among adult community residents without chronic conditions in Jiangsu province: a cross-sectional survey

  •   Objective  To identify populations at high risk of chronic diseases and to describe the distribution of chronic disease risk factors among adult community residents in Jiangsu province for providing evidences to health management and lifestyle interventions in community populations.
Methods  Totally 27 430 residents aged 35 – 75 years and without chronic conditions were randomly recruited with stratified cluster sampling at communities in 6 prefecture-level regions in Jiangsu province. Chronic disease-related questionnaire interviews, physical examinations and laboratory tests were carried out among the residents from September 2015 to June 2018.
Results  Among 27 430 residents completing the survey, 18 675 were assessed at a high risk of suffering from chronic diseases and the crude and standardized detection rate of high risk individuals were 68.08% and 65.00%, respectively. The most frequently detected risk factors of chronic diseases in the high-risk individuals were high-normal blood pressure (detected in 32.80% of the individuals), high-normal blood glucose (22.38%), high waist circumference (22.20%), current smoking (15.65%), and high serum total cholesterol (15.48%). Of the 18 675 high-risk individuals, 37.3%, 22.4%, 7.2%, and 1.2% were assessed with 1, 2, 3, and 4 – 5 chronic disease risk factors, respectively.
Conclusion  The detection rate of individuals at high risk of chronic diseases is high and the most prevalent risk factor is high-normal blood pressure among adult community residents without chronic conditions in Jiangsu province. Individualized health management should be promoted among high-risk populations for the prevention and control of chronic diseases.
