Prevalence and influencing factors of Alzheimer′s disease among community elderly of 65 years old and above: a cross-sectional survey in Guangzhou city

  •   Objective  To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) among community residents aged ≥ 65 years in Guangzhou city for providing evidence to health management in community elderly.
Methods  Face-to-face interview and physical examination were conducted among 1 342 elderly residents (aged ≥ 65 years) recruited with random cluster sampling from 13 communities in a district of Guangzhou city, Guangdong province during September – October 2021. A self-designed questionnaire, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Self-Care Ability Scale for Elderly People developed by domestic researchers were adopted in the survey. AD was diagnosed according to the criteria of International Classification of Diseases 10th Reversion (ICD-10) and International Working Group (IWG-2). Multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of AD.
Results  Among 1 266 participants with complete information, 87 (6.9%) were diagnosed with AD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that aged ≥ 75 years, taking nutritional supplements, having daily sleep duration of more than 9 hours, suffering from diabetes and with abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) were risk factors of AD; while, with the education of junior high school and above and having denture were protective factors against AD.
Conclusion  The prevalence rate of AD is high and mainly influenced by age, education, nutritional supplement intake, daily sleep duration, disease condition (diabetes and abnormal ECG), and denture use among 65 years old and elder community residents in Guangzhou city.
