A Qualitative Study on Needs of Sexual/Reproductive Health Education among University Students in Beijing

  • This study gathered information on the perceptions of university students with regard to university-based sexual/reproductive health education. Thirteen focus group discussions were conducted with university students at the four public universities with different disciplines in Beijing. This qualitative study showed that the students strongly called for immediately implementing comprehensive sexual/reproductive health educational programs. From the students'viewpoints, the combined approach (combination moral education with safer sexual education ) of sexual/reproductive health education should be highly recommended to really improve the effectiveness of intervention programs. Regarding means of eduction, students suggested the following principles to be met: (1)using multiple ways to meet different interests of different target audiences; (2) Non-sensitive information can be provided through population-based interventions',whilst highly sensitive topics such as condom use should be presented individually; (3) providing reproductive health care providers with training of ethics and de-sensitivity; (4) continually exploring and testing new means of education. This study reveals that students' own perceptions and aspiration to the issue could highly contribute to designing effective sexual/ reproductive health educational programs.
