Analysis on Contraceptive Knowledge of Unmarried Youth

  • ObjectiveTo understand how well unmarried youth grasped the contraceptive knowledge and the relevant factors.MethodsSAS software was used to analyze the data derived from "Study on Unmarried Youth's Requirements for Reproductive Health",from Aug,1995 to July,1996.ResultsThe contraceptive klowledge of unmarried youth was poor in China. The eligible rate was only 5.1%.Demographic characteristics such as sex, permanent residence, age, occupation, education, income affected the score of contraceptive knowledge. The results of multi-variable logistic regression showed the scores of sexual knowledge was lower among unmarried youth whose mothers were workers or farmers, who had never discussed sexual knowledge with parents or friends(including colleagues and classmates),unmarried youth who never had sexual intercourse had poor contraceptive knowledge.ConclusionsUnmarried youth should be the target of contraceptive propaganda and education. Those whose registered permanent residence was rural area, education and income were lower, should be the focus of contraceptive knowledge propaganda and education.Contraceptive knowledge can be provided to unmarried youth(especially for those who were elder)by variant ways such as hospital/MCH,school and medium.Simultaneously, knowledge exchange should be encouraged among unmarried youth to raise their contraceptive knowledge. It was also feasible to let parents instruct their children about sexual knowledge, which would bring profound significance to the youth who were involved in family and school life.
