Study on Effects of Selenium on Blood Glucose and Lipid Metabolism of Diabetic Rats

  • Objective To observe the effects of selenium on glucose and lipid metabolism in diabetic rats, and its related biochemical mechanism.Method Thirty-two healthy male Wistar rats were assigned to three groups(normal control, diabetic control, and selenium supplemented group).Fiftyμg/kg·bw was supplemented to selenium supplemented group each day by gavage for 60 days.At the end of the treatment, the blood biochemical analysis was performed. Results Blood glucose in selenium supplemented group decreased significantly than before experiment, and glucose tolerance was improved relevantly. The levels of serum TG,TC,LDL-C and AI in selenium supplemented group were lower than those of diabetic control, while the serum HDL-C levels were higher. The activity of SOD in erythrocytes and blood GPX increased and the content of MDA decreased obviously in selenium supplemented group. Conclusion Selenium could partially improve the disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism by means of increasing the antioxidant activity in diabetic rats.
