Study on Needs in Sex and Reproductive Health Education Among Young Unmarried People

  • Objective To determine the unmet needs of sexually activity of unmarried young adults for sex and reproductive health education and understand their acceptable ways to provide the education.Methods From July 1998 to April 1999,investigation was conducted among unmarried young adults by focus group discussion in eight provinces/cities in China.Results Most of young unmarried people had poor knowledge on sex,contraception and STDs/HIV.All of them longed for getting knowledge and information on sex,contraception and reproductive health from formal channels.However,their needs in the methods of sex education varied among different groups.The fetter of traditional values and worring about the negative effects of sex education were reported as the barriers of providing sex education for young unmarried people.Conclusion Reducing barriers was the precondition of providing sex education for young unmarried people;Different ways should be taken to provide sex education to meet the needs of different groups.
