Surveillance Study on Poliomyelitis Virus from 1996-1999 in Qinghai Province

Objective In order to understand the progress of poliomyelitis eradication and the status of eradicating wild poliomyelitis in different multitude,and to provide the evidence of formulate the immune strategies for Qinghai province.Methods Seven hundred and seventy six cases,stool specimens were collected from all acute flaccid paralysis(AFP).Persons who got in touch with AFP cases and children below five years old in high risk areas were collected.Twenty four poliovirus were detected in two methods of culture susceptible cell and gene alignment surveillance.Eighteen non polio enteroviruses were also isolated.Results The rate of isolation was 3.09% and 13.53%.The 2 cases wild poliovirus type-1 confirmed by national polio laboratory and America CDC and also confirmed that this wild poliomyelitis virus was imported from India,other was vaccine virus.Conclusion Since 1994,there was no local wild poliovirus found in whole province and high risk areas.The various of surveillance confirmed that our province now reached the goal and every requirement for proving no poliovirus existence.The rapid detection of bordering wild poliovirus indicated that the active surveillance was useful.
