Objective To compare the character of contraceptive use by the women during breastfeeding period between urban and rural areas, and to study places and methods obtaining contraception and causes for un-contraceptive.
Methods Using 2001 national family planning/reproductive health survey data were used, to analyze the contraceptive use by the women during breastfeeding period.
Results The percentage of contraceptive use was 78%.There were little difference in contraceptive prevalence and the reasons for un-contraceptive between urban and rural areas, and some difference in the composition of contraceptive methods, places and methods obtaining contraception.
Conclusion Because many Chinese women are not aware of the need to take contraceptive methods during breastfeeding period, it's urgent to enhance the intervention.
