A case-control study on risk factors of gestational diabetes mellitus

  Objective   To explore the risk factors of gestatinal diabetes mellitus(GDM).

  Methods   A hospital-based 1:4 matched case-control study was conducted.Each case was matched with four controls on age.21 GDM cases and 84 pregnant women without GDM were recruited.Information was collected through face-to-face interview, which included deographic data, disease history, disease family history, behavior pattern, social psychologic character, clinical data and laboratory data.

  Results  

  Results   from univariate conditional logistic regression analysis showed that GDM was associated with diabetic family history, family history of cancer, BMI, WHR and thigh circumference.The correspondingOR with 95% CI were 6.930 (1.840~26.105), 13.804(1.552~122.75), 4.947(1.274~19.203), 5.069(1.492~17.227)and 6.269(1.867~21.045)respectively.

  Conclusion   Diabetic family historty, family history of cancer, BMI > 26, WHR≥0.9 and thigh circumference > 60 cm were associated with higher risk for the development of GDM.
