Investigation on status of hypertension in urban and rural residents of Shanghai city

  •   Objective   To evaluate the epidemic status of hypertension in urban and rural Shanghai residents.
      Methods   A cross-sectional study on hypertension was conducted in Shanghai in 2002, including 8793 residents aged 15~74.
      Results   Prevalence and adjusted rate of hypertension were 29.43% and 17.16%, respectively.There was a difference in prevalence rate of hypertension between male and female.The hypertension prevalence rose with aging of population.Furthermore, the average age of urban patients was significantly higher than that in rural areas.The proportions of the categories of the newly diagnosed hypertension patients in urban areas were not similar with those in rural areas, but in both areas the major types were the mild and isolated systolic hypertension.
      Conclusion   Hypertension is a common disease in Shanghai population which has the high risk of hypertension.The comprehensive prevention and control for hypertension should be focused on.
