Relation between class 1 integrons and multiple drug resistance in pseudomonas aeruginosa

  • Objective To investigate the class 1 integrons in pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from burn units, study the relation between class 1 integrons and multiple drug resistance, and advise the selection of antimicrobiol drugs for the treatment of burn patients. Methods Class 1 integrons in 26 pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were detected with PCR.K-B drug susceptibility method was performed to test profile of drug resistance against 13 drugs. The relation between class 1 inte-grons and multiple drug resistance was analyzed. Results 16 isolates in 26 were identified class 1 integron positive (61.5%).Bacterial drug resistance rates of strains with class 1 integrons against the following drugs were determined:to-bramycin(93.8%),ofloxacin(93.8%)gentamicin(93.8%),ciprofloxacin(87.5%),cefatriaxone(62.5%),cefotaxime (62.5%),amikacin(56.2%),aztreonam(50.0%),imipenem(43.8%),cefoperazone(43.8%),cefepime(37.5%),piperacillin(37.5%)and ceftazidime(37.5%).Among 16 multiple drug resistant isolates(resistant of≥4 drugs tested)in total 26 isolates(61.5%,16/26),15 were class 1 integron positive(93.8%,15/16)and 1 was class 1 integron negative (10%,1/10).It showed that strains with class 1 integrons had significantly higher incidence of multipe drug resistance than those without(P<0101).Conclusion High incidence of class 1 integrons was found in pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates and close relation existed between class 1 integrons and multiple drug resistance.
