Investigation on anxiety and depression of family members of patients with tumor

  • Objective To investigate the morbility and distribution of anxiety and depression in the tumorpatient's families.With this data,more effective psychological inter vention was conducted among them.Methods Through questionnaire to investigate mental problems of 1023 members of tumor patient's family in the Zhenhai.Samples were assessed by SAS(Self-Rating A nx iety Scale),SDS(Self-Rating Depression Scale).Results About 56.4% (n=577)family members of patients with tumor felt anx iety,58.7% (n=601)depression.49.1% (n=502)of them felt both anxiety and depression.Stepwise Log istic regression analysis show ed that the factors related to the morbidity of anxiety and depression could be classified by following categories:age,the distance between the patient and the family members,the time of aware of the diag nosis(P<0.001).Moreover,Chi-square analysis showed that the most significant factors related to morbidity of anx iety and depression were economic income(P<0.01,P<0.01)and marriage(P<0.01,P<0.05).But there was no significant relationship between the morbidity of anx iet y and depression and sex(P>0.05).Conclusion The morbility of anxiety and depression in the tumor patient's families are higher than general people.And its extent could be affected by multiple factors,such as age,the distance between the patient and the family members,the time of aware of the diagnosis etc.Psychological intervention is necessary to be taken in these families.
