Effect of stress on iron of hematopoietic system in rats

  • Objective To observe the changes of iron of serum and bone marrow, and protein related to serum iron metabolism in rats under two types of stress. Methods Thirty rats were randomly divided into three groups:the control group, the foot shock group and psychological stress group. They were stressed for different periods of 3,7 and 14d.After being stressed, serum iron was detected by atom absorption method, the amount of iron in the bone marrow was measured by staining of potassium ferrocyanide, the serum ferritin and transferrin receptor were determined by EL ISA method. Results Compared with the control group, serum irons of the psychological stress group during the periods of 3,7 and 14d decreased by 28.4%,2717% and 34.0% respectivlely(P<0.05).Serum irons of the foot shock group during the periods of 3,7 and 14d decreased by 28.5% 18.3% and 40.7% respectivlely(P<0.05).Bone marrow irons decreased significantly of both group during the periods of 7 and 14d,and there was significant difference in the changes of protein related to iron metabolism during all periods(P<0.05).Conclusion Foot shock and psychological stress can result in significant decreased iron of serum and bone marrow. The degree of severity increased with the prolonging of the periods of stress. The significantly decreased SF and increased sTf R of both the period of 7d and that of 14d,collectively suggested that the decreased iron storage already affected the erythropoiesis.
