Relationship between serum iron and essential hypertension

  • Objective To explore the relationship between hypertension and serum iron in population of Heilongjiang Newspaper Office and to lay a foundation for hypertension etiological study. Methods The population of Heilongjiang News paper Office were selected as subjects to conduct the cross-sectional study in July 2005.All subjects were interviewed with questionnaire and measured for blood pressure, stature, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and risk factors of life style.Blood specimens were collected for detecting serum lipid, fasting plasma glucose, serum iron. All data were analyzed with SAS 911 software. Results There was significant difference for age and gender between the hypertensives and normotensives(P<0.01).The proportions of alcohol drinking and smoking had no significant difference in two groups. The average levels of T G,TC,LDL-c in hypertensives were higher than those in normotensives, but it was lower for HDL-c.Both the body mass index(BMI)and ratio of waist to hip circumference(WHR)were significantly higher in hypertensives than those in normotensives(P<0.01).The level of fasting plasma glucose(FPG)was higher in hypertensives than those in normotensives.Data from monovariate analysis showed serum iron was related to essential hypertension(P<0.05),lowlevel of serum iron might be a protective factor for them. The higher level of serum iron was not related with higher prevalence of hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension was not increased with the higher level of serum iron after adjusting by confounding factors. Conclusion Serum iron was not associated with essential hypertension.
