Study on prevalence of metabolic syndrome among city dwellers in Xuzhou city

Objective To describe the prev alence of metabolic syndr ome(MS)among city dwellers in Xuzhou city.Methods Multistage cluster sampling method was used and the participants were inter viewed by trained health workers using structured questionnaire about life-style and disease history.Medical examination and body measurement including body height and weight,waist and hip circumfer ence,blood pressure,fasting plasma glucose(FPG),blood lipids were measured.Re- sults The prevalence of MS was 15.2%(19.1% vs 8.6%,men vs women)by CDS(2004)definition,and prevalence of men was higher than that of women(P<0.01).The prev alence of MS increased with age and the female had higher prevalence than male among the subjects of 60 years old or more.The prevalence varied with education,occupation and income.Conclusion The prevalence of MS is high among city dwellers in Xuzhou city.
