Influencing factors associated with behavior characteristics of drug abuse in a community-based methadone maintenance treatment among drug users

  • Objective To investigate the performance characteristics and influencing factors of drug abuse in a community-based methadone maintenance treatment among drug users and to provide evidence for constituting strategies and measures on AIDS behavioural intervention.Methods A total of 655 drug users recruited from methadone maintenance treatment clinic in Changzhou were surveyed.Univariate analysis,multivariate Logistic regression analysis were used to explore influencing factors of drug abuse.Results Most of the subjects were middle-aged married male.The majority (75.4%) were intravenous drug users (IDUs) and 6.5% reported sharing inection equipments.There were 73.1% of 655 drug users reported having intravenous drug abuse behaviors;the average times were 100.But only 1.7% of them reported sharing injection equipments.There were 13.1% of 382 drug users who admitted having sex with multiple sex partners within the three months recently,and only 11% admitted using condoms in the last sex.Subjects without occupation tended to have injection drug abuse behaviors more than those who had self-labor income.The older their own age or the age of first drug abuse was,the less the probability of intravenous drug abuse was.Conclusion Drug users recruited from methadone maintenance treatment clinic in Changzhou are potential high risk population for HIV/AIDS.Methadone maintenance treatment should be carried out as soon as possible.All sectors of the society should pay more attention to living conditions of the population.
