Study on post-traumatic stress disorder and psychological intervention model in young students after natural disaster

  • Objective To understand the relations between natural disaster and post-traumatic stress disorder and means and effect of psychological intervention.Methods Self-made questionnaire and interview were conducted among adolescents in Jiangxi province for post-disaster assessment.Psychological intervention and psychosocial rehabilitation were also carried out among the adolescents.Results There was a significant diffence in need response between primary school boys and girls (36.8% vs 20.2% for looking about for teacher's help,63.2% vs 79.8% for looking about for help of friend or relatives) after the disaster.The ratio of emergency response as crying or yelling in middle school girls was significantly higher than that of boys (49.8% vs 34.9%).There were sighificant differences in emergency responses between male university students and female (56.8% vs 75.4% for escaping solitarily,43.2% vs 3.2% for crying or yelling,43.2% vs 21.4% for helping others,88.9% vs 72.4% for looking about for teacher's help,11.1% vs 27.6% for looking about for help of friend or relatives).There were significant differences in physiological response,adaptation,recognition,psycological response,and behavioral response between pupils and middle school or college students.The psychological rehabita-tion of adolescents was obviously affected by death or injury of relatives,gender,and age.After intervention,there were significant differences in emotion,recognition,and behavior among the adolescents compared to that of before the intervention.The effect of psychological intervention varied with the age and education level of adolescents.In the intervention,commumication and good relationship establishment yield good effect for pupils;educations on life and death were with good result among middle school students and all intervention measures showed good effect among college students.Conclusion The post-traumatic stress disorder occurs easily among adolescents after natural disaster.The effect of psychological intervention after natural disaster varies with the age and education level of the adolescents.
