Epidemiology and risk factor of overweight, obesity and central obesity in midwestern rural area of Shandong pro-vince,China

  • Objective To analyze epidemiologic characteristics and influential factors of overweight, obesity and central obesity among residents aged >25 years in rural midwestern area of Shandong province. Methods A total of 16388 rural residents were selected with multi-stage stratified random sampling. All participants were interviewed with a standard questionnaire.Anthropometric indicators including height, weight, waist circumference were measured.Glucose oxidase assay was employed for fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test.Epidemiologic characteristics and influential factors of overweight, obesity and central obesity were described and analyzed. Results Crude prevalence rate for overweight, obesity, central obesity was 35.28%,15.31%,40.63%,while age-adjusted prevalence rate was 34.95%,15.42%,38.53%,respectively.The prevalence rate of overweight, obesity and central obesity in female was higher than that of in male. The prevalences of overweight, obesity and central obesity were different between different groups classified by age, education, income and occupation.Ratio of overweight to obesity was 2.3:1.Logistic regression analysis indicated that female (OR=1.749),high education level, service occupation, physical exercise (OR=1.715),high level of income, age, sedentary behavior (OR=1.088) were risk factors of obesity.Stress (OR=0.947) was protective factors of overweight, obesity and central obesity. Conclusion Prevalence rates for overweight, obesity and central obesity were at a high level in midwestern rural area of Shandong province. It is required to strengthen interventions on major risk factors.
