Metabolic syndrome prevalence among people of 35 years and elder in urban communities of Wenzhou city

Objective To study the prevalence of metabolic syndroma(M S)among the people aged 35 years and elder in Wenzhou city.Methods MS was diagnosed according to the definition proposed by Chinese Society for Diabetes Mellitos in 2004.Using multistage sampling,4106 people aged 35 years and elder were surveyed among 3 urban districts of Wenzhou.Results Among the people surveyed,the MS prevalence rate was 11.5%,and the age-standardized prevalence was 11.10%.The prevalence of metabolic syndrom a increased with age Men had a higher prevalence than women(P<0.01).Hypertension showed a highmte among MS components Hypertension,overweight and abnounal semmlipid was the highest in MS combinations.Conclusion The prevalencemte of MS is high in residents of Wenzhou Theprevevtion and control of MS should be strengthened.
