Prevalence of thyroid cancer among residents of Wenzhou city, 1997 to 2008

Objective To analyze the epidemiological characte ristics and risk factor of thyroid cancer among residents of Wenzhou and to provide information for prevention and control of the cancer.Methods The data on patients with thyroid cancer in hospitals of Wenzhoucity were collected and analyzed.Results The standardized incidence rate of thyroid cancer among theres idents was 2.78 per 100 000 during the period of 1997-2008,and there was an increased tendency in mortality rate and incidence rate of thyroid cancer.The incidence rate was the highest among the residents of 55 years old.The risk factors for thyroid cancer were radiation,pollution,ove rdose of iodine,and infection.Conclusion Rapid increase in incidence rate of thyroid cancer suggests that further research and control of risk factors of thyroid cancer should be conducted among residents of wenzhou city.
