Hypertension prevalence and its awareness, medication and control among rural residents in Liaoning province

  • Objective To verify the preva lence and the control rate of hypertension among rural residents in Liaoning province and to explore the trend of blood pressure variation in the population. Methods Prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension were investigated among 5 122 rural residents(≥35 years old)with a questionnaire survey. Results The prevalence of hypertension was 34.6% among the residents.Of all hypertensive patients,36.68% were aware of their high blood pressure;21.78% had antihypertensive medication, and only 3.05% had their blood pressure under control (<140/90mm Hg).The prevalence and degree of hypertension increased with age increment. There were differences in knowledge rate and treatment rate between residents in different age group(P<0.05).The blood pressure control rate decreased with the age but without statistical significance(P>0.05).Conclusion The prevalence of hypertension is high in the rural residents of Liaoning province with a high ratio of grade 2 and grade 3,and the control rate of hypertension is low. There is an urgent need for comprehensive intervention of hypertension.
