Case-control study on influencing factors of lung cancer in Dafeng county, Jiangsu province

  • ObjectiveTo explore influencing factors and potential interaction between the influencing factors of lung cancer in Dafeng county,an area with high cancer incidence in Jiangsu province,China.MethodsA population-based 1:1 matched case-control study was carried out in Dafeng county with 613 pairs of newly diagnosed lung cancer cases and health control subjects.Epidemiology data was collected by face-to-face interview using a standard questionnaire.Univariate and multivariate conditional logistic regression was applied for calculating crude odds ratio(OR)and the adjusted OR of 46 potential influencing factors of lung cancer.Potential interaction between smoking, alcohol drinking and green tea drinking on lung cancer were estimated, respectively.ResultsIn univariate conditional logistic regression analysis, smoking, frequent exposure to cooking fume, history of pulmonary tuberculosis, alcohol drinking, environmental tobacco smoking(ETS),the immigrants from Qidong and Haimen County, melancholy temperament, frequently washing grain containers and regularly green tea drinking were found to be the potential influencing factors of lung cancer. In multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis, smoking, melancholy temperament and frequent exposure to cooking fume were found to be the risk factors of lung cancer with adjusted OR of 3.198(95% confidence interval(CI)=2.242-4.563),2.767(95% CI=1.572- 4.872)and 1.347(95% CI=1.007-1.800),respectively.Regular green tea drinking and frequently washing grain container were found inversely associated with lung cancer risk in Dafeng county with the adjusted OR of 0.574(95% CI= 0.400-0.824)and 0.754(95% CI=0.573-0.993),respectively.No significant interaction was found between smoking, alcohol drinking and green tea drinking on lung cancer risk.ConclusionSmoking, melancholy temperament and frequent exposure to cooking fume could significantly increase the risk of lung cancer in Dafeng county.Regulary green tea drinking and frequently washing grain containers may reduce the risk of lung cancer in the area.
