Endemic situation of schistosomiasis in Qianjiang city

  • ObjectiveTo study the endemic trend of schistosomiasis in Qianjiang city through analyzing surveillance data from2006 to 2008.MethodsFour surveillance sites for schistosomiasis were established in Qianjiang.Longitudical surveillance and analysis on the endemic situation of schistosomiasis were annually carried out.ResultsThe infection rates among the residents decreased gradually from2006 to 2008 with an annual rate of 3.35%,2.97% and 1.77%,respectively.The infection rates of male were higher than that of female from2006 to 2008.A higher infection rate was observed in the residents at the age of 40-50 years in 2006 and at the age of 50-60 in 2007 and 2008.There was no acute case or new infection case of advanced stage during the period. The infection rates of cattle decreased year by year(10.75%,6.83% and 5.18%).The infection rates of snail were at a relatively low level for three years, but the area of snail habitating didn't decrease obviously.ConclusionAlthough the infection rates of the residents and animals decreased from2006-2008,the area of snail habitating was still at a high level.More effective preventive strategies for schistosomiasis should be taken to control the endemic of the disease.
