Effects of milk and soy milk intake on plasma minerals and hormones among healthy young men

  • ObjectiveTo study the effects of milk and soy milk intake on plasma calcium, phosphorus, insulin, glucose, estradinl, and testosterone in healthy young men.MethodsThiryt-six male undergreduate students were randomly assigned to milk group, soy milk group and water group for a 3 weeks dietory intervention. The plasma levels of biochemical indicator were determined before and after the inrvention.ResultsPlasma calcium increased by 0.19 mmol/L(P<0.05) and 0.20 mmol/L(P<0.05)after the intervention with milk and soy milk, respectively. After intervention, plasma phosphorus level was significantly higher in the soy milk group(1.34±0 17 mmol/L)than that of in the control group (1.17±0.20 mmol/L,P<0.05).The plasma estradiol level was significantly higher in the milk group (37.92±10.98 pg/mL)than that of in the control group(30.42±9.22 pg/ml,P<0.05).The intervention did not significantly change plasma insulin and blood glucose(P>0.05).ConclusionThe results suggest that the effects of heavy consumption of milk and soy milk on health should be further investigated.
