Evaluation of different diagnostic criterion for MS among country residents of Yanbian area

  • ObjectiveTo compare the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS)and to evaluate the diagnostic criterion under different definitions for MS among Yanbian rural adults.MethodsTotally 5 834 residents aged≥20 years were selected wtih multiple-stage random cluster sampling and investigated with questionnaire survey, physician check and laboratory test.MS was diagnosed with American Cholesterol Training Programe Guideline(ATPⅢ),International Diabetes Federation(IDF),Chinese Medical Association-Diabetes Sub-Branch(CDS),and Guideline for Chinese Adult Diabetes Prevention (GCADP)definition, respectively.ResultsThe mean age-adjusted prevalence of MS under ATPⅢ,IDF,CDS,and GCADP definitions were 26.3%,16.5%,13.8%,24.2% for Korean men,23.1%,15.2%,12.9%,20.2% for Han men, 30.3%,25.9%,12.0%,17.5% for Korean women, and 29.4%,25.7%,10.3%,15.4% for Han women, respectively. The Korean had higher prevalence than the Han(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Kappa value(0.794)showed the highest consistency between ATPⅢ and IDF;the Kappa value was 0.747 between GCADP and ATPⅢ,0.616 between GCADP and IDF, 0.472 between CDS and ATPⅢ,and 0.467 between CDS and IDF,respectively.ConclusionThe Korean had higher prevalence of MS according to four definitions than the Han.Kappa value showed the high consistency between GCADP and ATPⅢ,and IDF,and showed the general consistency between GCADP and CDS.
