Analysis on epidemiological characteristics of 381 HIV/AIDS cases in out-patient clinic

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the HIV/AIDS epidemic characteristics and to provide data for the government to workout strategies on HIV/AIDS control and prevention.MethodsThe demographic and epidemiological data of HIV/AIDS patients diagnosed from JAN 1993 to JUL 2009 in the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University were analyzed retrospectively.ResultsThe cumulative number of HIV positives was 381.Among the cases,males accounted for 87.4%,and 59.8% were at the age of 19 to 40 years.The number of HIV positive cases increased about 46 folds from 1993-1997 to 2006-2009.Homosexual transmission was 3.3% during 1993-1997 and showed a dramatic increase to 73.2% during 2006-2009.Among the men who have sex with men(MSMs),37.2% had hetero sexual partners and 12.8% got married.ConclusionThe epidemic of AIDS increased rapidly.Homosexual transmission is the main mode.AIDS prevention education and intervention should be continued to prevent the spread of HIV from high risk population to general population.
