Prevalence of metabolic syndrome among steel industry employees in Guangzhou city

  • ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS)among steel industry employees in Guangzhou city.MethodsAcross sectional study was conducted among 4 241 employees aged 20-60 years in an iron-steel company.All subjects took questionnaire investigation and physical examination.Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to the definition of International Diabetes Federation(IDF)2005.ResultsThe crude prevalence of MS in the subjects was 9.70% (9.81% in men,9.40% in women)and the adjusted prevalence was 7.95% (8.87% in men,6.97% in wonen).The adjusted prevalence of central obesity,hypertrigly ceridemia,lower high density lipoprote in cholesterol, high blood pressure and high fasting blood glucose/diabetes were 15.85%,27.05%,20.46%,17.20%,and 8.29%,respectively.About 55.70% of the subjects had one or more of metabolic components.The prevalence of MS increased with age.Alcohol drinking,family history of hypertension,family history of diabete,swaisthip ratio,cigarette smoking index,and hyperuricemia were related with the prevalence of MS.ConclusionThe prevalence of MS and related diseases are high among steel industry employees aged 20-49 years in Guangzhou city.The prevalence of MS in the employees aged 20-49 years is higher than that of in population of other areas.Clustering of MS com ponents is common.
