Analysis of school-based primary and middle school students injury surveillance in Shenzhen city, 2006-2009

  • ObjectiveTo explore the characteristics of student injury,and to formulate injury prevention strategies and measures.MethodsThere were 20 school injury surveillance points chosen with cluster sampling in 6 districts of Shenzhen.The surveillance data from 1,Sep 2006 to 31,Aug 2009 were collected by school physician with injury report form, and sent to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and analy zed with SPSS 15.0.ResultsDuring theperiod,there were 765 students with injuries(629 boys,136 girls).The average injury rate was 0.89%.Fall was the first injury type among the students with injury.The frequent body parts involved in the injuries was upper limb(43.7%),lower limb (25.9%),and head(25.4%).Cut, bite,open wound(32.0%)and frac ture(30.7%)were the most types of the injuries, and the majority location of the injuries occurred in school(73.9%).The most of the injuries(96.5%)were moderate and minor,and 45.8% of the students with injuries had medical cost of between 101-500 RM Byuan.The injuries were significant different among school types,injury locations and body parts.ConclusionThe student injury surveillance based on school is good way to learn the characteristics of student injury.Prevention strategies can be made according to these characters to reduce the student injury.
