Status and economic burden of non-communicable chronic diseases among the elderly in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps

  • Objective To know the status and economic burden of non-communicable chronic diseases(NCDs) among the elderly in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.Methods Astratified-cluster random sampling based cross-sectional questionnaire survey among the elderly was carried out in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in 2008.Results In 2008,the prevalence of NCDs among the elder was 612.1?.The prevalences of circulatory,endocrinic,digestive,muscular,and respiratory disease were 552.16‰,130.10‰,118.11‰,114 51‰,and 70.74 ‰,respectively.Hypertension,diabetes,other heart disease,coronary heart disease,and cerebro vascular disease were the top five prevalent NCDs in the study population.The total economic burden of NCDs was 0.764 billion RMB yuan,with the direct economic burden of 0.741 billion RMB yuan and the indirect economic burden of 0.022 billion RMB yuan.Conclusion Circulatory system diseases are main diseases among the elderly in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps,especially hypertension.Non-communicable diseases result in heavy economic burden to the eldely,households and the society.
