Impaired fasting glucose and diabetes mellitus in rural residents of Yanbian area

  • Objective To investigate the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and diabetes mellitus(DM),and their correlated factors among rural residents of Yanbian area. Methods Across sectional study was carried out among 5.335 residents aged 3060 years. Results The crude prevalecne of IFG was 6.1% (159/2 600) in Korean and 5.9% (161/2 735) in Han with the age adjustd prevalence of 5.5% and 5.5%,respectively.The crude prevalence of DM was 7.2% (186/2 600) and 5.7% (156/2 735) for Korean and Han residents with the age adjusted prevalence of 6.1% and 4.9%,respectively.The preva lences of IFG and DM showed significan tsex differences in both nationlities.Multiple factor analysis showed tha tmale, alcohol drinking, central obesity (odds ratio OR=1.329,95% confidence interval CI:1.0221.730),high trigly ceride(OR=1.745,95% CI:1.3332.283),high cholestero l(OR=2.033,95% CI:1.4972.761),and metabolic syndrom (MS) (OR=6.630,95% CI:5.1068.608) were risk factors of IFG (P < 0.05); male, older age, lower educatiion level, central obesity(OR=1.855,95% CI:1.4072.446),high cholesterol(OR=1.864,95% CI:1.379-2 520),high trigly ceride(OR=2.281,95% CI:1.7372.996),and MS (OR=7.779,95% CI:5.937 10.191) were risk factors of DM (P=0.000).Conclusion The prevalences of IFG and DM are positively correlated with sex,age (DM),alcohol drinking (IFG),educatioin (DM),central obesity, high chole sterol, high triglyceride, and MS in rural residents of Yanbian area, respectively.
