Combined effects of LBP+LJP on recovery of radiation-induced damage in testicular tissue of male rats

  • Objective To examine combined effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides(LBP) and Laminaria japonica polysaccharides(LJP) on the recovery of radiation-induced damage in testicular tissue of male rats. Methods Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups:control, negative control,LBP,LJP,and LBP+LJP group. The rats were administered with LBP,LJP,and LBP+LJP by gavage every day for 28 days.Seven days after the first LBP,LJP or LBP+LJP treatment, the rats were exposed to 60Co γ-ray radiation at the dose of 0.925Gy/min and the target distance of 80 cm for 20 days with a total radiation dose of 2.3 Gy for each rat.Testis tissue damage, organ factor, sperm count, sperm viability, antioxidant capacity, and morphological changes in testicular tissue of the rats were determined at 1,7,and 14 days after the radiation. Results The organ factor of testis increased significantly in rats of LBP+LJP group 14 days after the radiation. The concentrations of malondialdehyde(0.87±0.66 nmol/mgprot) and the superoxide dismautased increased(157.35±10.52 U/mgprot) significantly compared to those of other groups(P < 0.05 or P < 0.01 for all). Conclusion The combined effects of LBP+LJP could effectively promote natural recorery of radiation-induced damage of testis tissue in rats.
