Nutrition and health status of Wuxi citizens above 35 years old

  • Objective To describe the status of nutrition and health related indices among Wuxi citizens above 35 years old.Methods A multi-stage cluster sampling was used to select subjects from 7 communities in Wuxi city in 2009.A faceto-face questionnaire survey,anthropometry and body composition examination,measurement of biochemical indices,and dietary investigation were conducted among the subjects.Results There were 2 097 citizens attended in the survey (802 men and 1 295 women) with a mean age of 55.0±8.5 years.The prevalence rates of malnutrition,overw eight,obesity,dyslipidemia,impaired fasting glucose,and hypertension were 1.6%,39.8%,14.8%,44.6%,7.7%,and 46.2%.Except malnutrition,there were age and regional differences in the prevalence rates of the diseases.The nutritional status of Wuxi citizens was not good and the difference in food intake between urban and rural populations was significant,except grain and meat.The energy supply ratio of fat in food was over 30%.Conclusion The status of nutrition and health related indices in Wuxi citizens above 35 years old need to be improved and the control of chronic diseases should be enhanced.
