AIDS-related knowledge among different occupational populations

Objective To examine the status of AIDS-related knowledge among different occupational populations in Cangzhou for conducting target-oriented health education.Methods Totally 3 456 residents in Cangzhou city were sampled and investigated on general conditions,general knowledge about AIDS trasmission and prevention.Results The awareness rate of general knowledge of AIDS was between 38.0%-95.8%.There were 95.8% of the participants knowing about AIDS,84.7% knowing about AIDS being a infectious disease,and only 38.0% know ing the AIDS Day.The awareness rates of cadres and students were higher than that of farmers.Most of the participants knew the 3 transmission routes.The awareness rate for sexual transmission,blood transmission,and mother-to-child transmission of AIDS,86.3%,90.7%,and 82.5%,respectively,with a higher rate in the cadres.The awareness rate of non-transmission was 9.9%-53.8%,with the higher rates in the farmers and students.The awareness rate of prevention know ledge was between 69.6% and 86.1%.Among the participants,the know ledge rate was 73.6% for AIDS prevention through behavioral control,69.6% for correct condom use,86.1% for examination before marrige,and 78.5% for blood products detection,respectively.Conclusion There are significant differences in the awareness of AIDS know ledge among Cangzhou occupational populations and the efforts should be made to enhance the publicity and education on the prevention and treatment of AIDS.
