Relationship between mental health and coping style among prison police women

  • Objective To examine the relationship between prison police women's mental health and their coping style.Methods By random sampling,128 police women were administered with Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90) and Coping Style Questionnaire.Results There were significant higher scores for somatization(1.68±0.04),depression(1.77±0.05),anxiety(1.60±0.04),hostility(1.68±0.05),phobia(1.32±0.02),psychoticism(1.47±0.03),and additional-items(1.76±0.05) among the police women compared with the norm of Chinese.There were significant positive correlations between self-blame,fantasy,avoidance and all factors of SCL-90(P < 0.01 for all).There were significant positive correlations between rationalization and obsessive-compulsive,interpersonal sensitivity,depression,anxiety,hostility,and paranoid(P < 0.01 or P < 0.05).There were significant negative correlations between solving the problem and obsessive-compulsive,interpersonal sensitivity,depression,hostility,paranoid,and psychoticism(P < 0.01 or P < 0.05).There was a significant negative correlation between assistance and paranoid(P < 0.01).Conclusion The prison police women's mental health level was lower than the norm of national adults.Mature coping style is beneficial for maitaining mental health.
