Effects of 11 years community intervention on hypertension,diabetes and KAP of the diseases among urban residents

  • Objective To explore the impact of 11 years’ community intervention on chronic diseases and knowledge,attitude,and practice(KAP) about the diseases among urban population and to provide reference for improvement of chronic disease community intervention.Methods Multi-stage sampling method was used to randomly select residents aged 15 years and above in Huaiyin district,Ji'nan city in 1999.Two surveys with face-to-face interviews were carried out among the residents before and after the 11 years’ community intervention on chronic diseases from 1999 to 2010.Results A total of 1 998 and 2 042 valid questionnaires were collected in 1999 and 2010,respectively.Hypertension prevalence rate was 16.3% and diabetes prevalence rate was 3.1% in 1999.But the rates increased significantly to 25.6% and 7.3% in 2010(P<0.05).The average KAP scores was 27.94±6.95 in 1999 and 30.62±7.98 in 2010,with a siginificant increase(t=11.397,P<0.001).Conclusion Prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes increased among the residents aged 15 years and above in Ji’nan city,and KAP score increased by 2.68 from 1999 to 2010.Community intervention is an effective way for chronic disease control and prevention.
