Influence of gender role on social behavior of college students

  • Objective To investigate the influence of gender role on social behavior in college students.Methods By applying Chinese Sex-Role Inventory(CSRI-50)and Texas Social Behavior Inventory(TSBI),a questionnaire survey was conducted among 208 college students of University of Science and Technology of Suzhou in Jiangsu province.Results The results showed that the college students with androgyny trait had higher social ability and more positive social behavior than those with feminine and undifferentiated trait (P<0.01).The mean score of the students with androgyny trait was 2.50±0.83 for total social behavior,2.75±0.71 for self-efficiency,2.50±0.83 for social ability,and 2.29±0.79 for management.The college students with undifferentiated trait had lower self-confidence and social ability in social behavior than those with androgyny and masculine trait (P<0.05).The mean score of the students with undifferentiated trait was 1.62±0.70 for total social behavior,1.76±0.70 for self-efficiency,1.62±0.70 for social ability,and 1.56±0.60 for management.The scores of both masculine and feminine questionnaire had significant relationship with the social behavior,except for social holdback(P<0.001).Masculine trait showed significantly more positive prediction to social behavior than feminine trait.Conclusion The college students with androgyny trait have higher ability in social behavior.The deviation exists in the social behavior of college students with undifferentiated trait.The college students with masculine trait have higher self-confidence than those with feminine trait.
