Canonical correlation analysis on sleep quality and stress among college students in Guangzhou city

  • Objective To explore the association between sleep quality and stress among college students, and to determine factors of pressure correlated most closely with sleep quality. Methods College students from 6 universities in Guangzhou city were selected with cluster sampling method. The sleep quality was evaluated with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)and the college students' stress scale was used for the assessment of pressure condition. The data were analyzed with canonical correlation analysis by Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS).Results Totally 1 400 questionnaires were distributed and 1 296 qualified questionnaires were collected with an efficiency of 92.6%.Survey results showed that the total stress score was 34.19± 17.92 and the score of individual annoyance was the highest(16.01±9.63)among the students. For the students, the PSQI score was 6.04±3.33 and the overall prevalence of sleep disturbances(PSQI score ≥8) was 28.4%(368/1 296),with a significant canonical correlation. The canonical correlation coefficient of the two pairs of canonical variables were 0.380 and 0.244,respectively,and the cumulative proportion of the first two pairs of canonical variables was above 0.98.For the first pair of canonical variables, the contribution of sleep efficiency, sleep disorders and individual pressure were higher, while for the second pair, hypnotic drugs, daytime dysfunction and study stress, and individual pressure were the most important factors. Conclusion Stress status has obvious effect on sleep quality, sleep disorder, daytime dysfunction, and hapnotic drug use and the stress on study and individual annoyance contribute mainly to sleep quality among college students in Guangzhou city.
